Project statement
Each quarter we publish a full-color, glossy zine and distribute it to our subscribers. Since joining the project, the readership of Back Alley Games has increased significantly.
All written editorial content is either produced or edited by me with help from the other members of the editorial staff. My work has included interviews with developers, original investigative reporting, and opinion pieces.
In addition to writing, my work on this project extends to formatting and direction. In 2024, Back Alley Games (then called the Indie City Games Zine) was an organization newsletter distributed mainly in pdf format.
Starting in January 2025, the editorial team and I focused on a more traditional editorial vision with an emphasis on consistency from issue to issue. As part of this work, I created the Back Alley Games stylebook that is still in use by the editorial staff and contributors to the publication.
My work on this project is ongoing and currently concerns the shift from a smaller monthly format to a larger quarterly schedule. As part of that process, the editorial team is attempting to shift the focus away from video games alone, grow our subscriber base, and increase our web presence.
Print Magazine: January 2025 – Present
Beginning in January 2025, I have been the managing editor of Back Alley Games, an independent gaming publication. Issue 22 (left) is the most recent of the 12 issues I have produced with the team.
This issue was produced between January and March 2026 with Jonah Lillioja and Sebastian Galvez. We distribute to 25 print subscribers and 10 digital subscribers. The print edition of this issue totals 54 pages and over 24,000 words.
Over the many hours spent on this issue, I was responsible for original reporting and interviews, sourcing contributor submissions, all additional written copy, all line and copy edits, and the ordering of content within the issue. Besides that, I collaborated with Jonah Lillioja on the layout, providing edits and feedback to all layout drafts and helping source article images, including drafting captions.
Further, I continue to act as Back Alley Games’ webmaster. Web versions of this issue’s articles can be found at https://backalleygames.online/tag/spring/
An archive of past Back Alley Games issues is available upon request.
Back Alley Games website: Aug. 2025 – Feb. 2026
Between August 2025 and February 2026, I produced and maintained these versions of the Back Alley Games homepage. The website is still live and can be accessed here.
Beginning as a place to direct subscribers to during an in-person event, the Back Alley Games website has, under my direction, transformed into a repository for all the publication’s written content, a tool for gathering and managing subscriptions, and an online store.
I continue to maintain the website.
